SEA Games: Welson Sim swim to new 400m freestyle record

Sim with the gold medal after setting a new SEA Games record in 400m freestyle



KUALA LUMPUR: National swimming ace Welson Sim retained his SEA Games 400m freestyle gold in style after splashing his way to new Games record of 3:50.26 at the National Aquatic Centre. The 20-year-old held the previous Games mark of 3:53.97. Aflah Fadlan Prawira of Indonesia came in second in 3:54.15 while Nguyen Huu Kim Son took bronze with 3:54.20.

Welson Sim secured yet another gold medal and another SEA Games record after finishing first in the men's 200m freestyle today. The latest achievement came just two days after he rewrote the SEA Games record in men's 400m freestyle. With a time of 1:47.79s, he beat the previous record (1.48.96s) set by Vietnam's Hoang Quy Phuoc, who finished today's race in second with a new personal best of 1:48.07s. Sim also equalled the time set by Olympic gold medallist Joseph Schooling in 4×200m freestyle relay at the 2015 SEA Games. Singapore's Yeo Kai Quan ame third in 1:48.98s.

While, in 12 June 2017, Welson Sim beats Olympic champion to win gold in Monaco. National swimmer Welson Sim splashed his way to a new men’s 400m freestyle national record at the Mare Nostrum Tour Swimming Championship in Monaco on Saturday. The 20-year-old Sarawakian clocked 3 minutes 49.48 seconds in the 400m freestyle to renew his own national record of 3:50.33s that was set at the National Age-Group Swimming Championships in Singapore, last year. Olympic champion Mack Horton of Australia came in second with a time of 3:50.14 seconds while China’s Qiu Ziao settled for third place with a time of 3:51.18s.

Sim’s victory also received praise from Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, who hailed the achievement via Twitter.
